Organization (2)

getmyselforagnizedhead.jpgWelcome to Get Myself Organized

GetMyselfOrganized.com has been up and running since October 2006, and I have been writing regular articles for it all that time, except between August and December 2008.  A new article is added every two weeks, and arrives by email to over 30,000 subscribers to GetMyselfOrganized.com

GetMyselfOrganized.com now re-directs to the organization and running a home section of YvetteWrites.com.  This seemed a simpler way to keep all my writing together.  If this turns out to be the wrong decision, I still own the domain name, so I can change it if need be.

If you’re interested in improving yourself, and improving your life, these articles aim to provide information, motivation, ideas and inspiration to help you get the most out of your life through organization.

Being organized makes life easier, and is a demonstration of control over your own life and your own decisions.

To do anything in an orderly way involves decision making, and the ability to make good decisions and carry them out is affected by self esteem.

Self esteem and motivation issues can be pretty tricky to deal with, but by applying some simple strategies to the practical details of everyday living, there can be a beneficial flow-on effect to how we feel, which is what these articles are going for.

As mentioned on the About page, I'm a fan of Flylady, and her site inspired me to choose organization as my first topic to start writing about.

Before hearing of the wonderful Flylady, I always had a weekly schedule for my housework and any other stuff I wanted done regularly, and daily routines to help me keep up with what I wanted to do.  The first time I heard of the index card system was in an old feminist novel from the 70s called The Women’s Room.  I hadn’t heard of Pam and Peggy or the whole Sidetracked Home Executives thing.

What I love about Flylady is her wonderful common sense and genuine desire to help others with the sorts of issues so many of us struggle with, a big one being perfectionism.  The acronyms and inside language are not my cup of tea, but the information is excellent.  Reading her site got me thinking it would be a topic I would love to write about, and my ideas are certainly consistent with Marla’s, though I’m not into the whole shiny sink thing.  Many of Marla’s readers though, have described how they’ve replaced the shiny sink with something meaningful to them, clearly ‘getting’ the idea behind it.

I’ve now started collecting books about organization, both household, business and general, both old and new, and intend to work my way through them and let them influence my writing.  The main focus of my writing about organization is dealing with the feelings surrounding it, and practical ways of dealing with them.

Getting things done now, as you go along PDF Print E-mail

It’s one of those little habits you can develop a little bit at a time, and grow it until it encompasses a lot of what you do and makes your life much easier.

How many times in a day do you notice some little thing that would take 2 seconds to attend to, and you leave it, ignore it, walk past it, or just get annoyed by it?  Lots?

Here are some examples.

Home office corner PDF Print E-mail

I run this little business from what is probably supposed to be the dining room of this small suburban family home, but is way too small for the big table my family sits at for meals.  It is sort of a whole room, but feels like a corner because it is in the corner of the house with two rooms leading off it.  There are double sliding doors on one wall leading into the kitchen/meals area, and a double archway with no doors leading into the lounge room/family room.  I can keep a good eye on the kids from here, and get to my desk easily while I’m cooking, cleaning, washing and so on.  It contains an Ikea desk, a filing cabinet, a couple of chairs and a piano, and until recently one overloaded Ikea Billy bookcase.

The problem with my office until recently, was lack of storage.  The two drawer filing cabinet was broken and overloaded, and books were in piles on the floor with nowhere for them to go.

Organizing kids' stuff PDF Print E-mail

So, in the last couple of weeks I managed to do some kid de-cluttering.  No, I didn’t get rid of any of the kids, they’re all still here trashing the joint, but I saw that I needed to make room for new clothes and toys that had been coming into the house lately, and also take some steps to make my daily life easier.

My little boy has just turned 4, and likes to dress himself, but I had been wasting precious time in the mornings trying to explain to him that it’s winter now (I live in Australia) and shorts, T-shirts and sandals are no good.

What is organized? PDF Print E-mail
Written by Yvette

Why do you want to be organized?  What does it actually mean?

Is it about tidiness?

No.  There are people who appear to be very untidy, yet they are still organized.  There are also people who are very tidy, but still disorganized about some things.

Is it about cleanliness?

No.  There are people who are not bothered by dust and dirt but are still organized.  There are also people who are obsessively clean, but are still disorganized about some things.

So what does it mean then?

Routines PDF Print E-mail

ROUTINES

We get disorganized because things we need to do are left undone, put off, not planned for, not made room for.  The answer to this is routines.  If you’re a fan of FlyLady you know all about them, and if you’ve read my e-book you’ll know it’s the basis for my approach to being organized too.

Routines are about designing your life.  Yes, you can have your own custom designed life, incorporating all the things that matter to you, in order of priority.
